Announcing NMR’s 2023 Artist in Residence

NMR is a shared space among academics, artists, and activists to highlight and discuss their work. The artist in residence is chosen each year to share their work with the journal's readership. Their work will be featured both in the print journal and website.

The 2023 artist in residence is Sarah Ellis.

Sarah grew up in rural Ohio and received her BFA in Printmaking from the University of Akron in 2014 with minors in Painting, Art History, and Chemistry. She knew that she wanted to continue her education as a maker, so she began graduate school in 2015. She received her MFA in Studio Art with a Concentration in Printmaking from the University of North Texas in May 2018. That same year she began a position as an adjunct professor at Murray State University and remained there until May 2020.

Currently, Sarah is the Assistant Professor of Printmaking at Jacksonville State University in the Department of Art and Design. She instructs a wide range of classes including Art Foundations Courses, Intaglio, Relief, Lithography, Screen Printing, Artists' Books, and more. Her personal studio work consists of predominantly printmaking, paper arts, illustration, and sculpture. She maintains an active CV including national and international exhibitions, publications, curatorial work, and academic conference presentations. Sarah is a member of the LGBTQ+ community and participates in JSU's Safe Zone program as a Facilitator. When she isn't working, she enjoys self-care practices that include cooking, rock climbing, and spending time with her partner & her cat.
